How can I get required financial work experience to become a Certified Financial Planner while still teaching? I’m interested in becoming a Certified Financial Planner, but I’m facing something of a “Catch 22.” In order to complete the requirements for the formal certification as a financial planner, a person has to have 3 years of financial work experience. I’m currently a full-time high school social studies teacher, and would like to make the transition to the new career as quickly as possible after I retire from teaching (in about 10 years). What can I do while I’m still a full-time teacher to get the financial work experience I need so that I can make the transition to a Certified Financial Planner without having to spend 3 years getting this experience after I retire from teaching? Thanks in advance for your time, ideas, and information.

Is financial analysis and consolidating debt really worth it? My boyfriend and I just had a financial analysis done but haven't gotten the results on our options yet. Is it really worth it to go through with this? Has anyone had experience on it? I mean we have debt but not so much we can't handle. On the other hand we are both mid-twenties and have no retirement savings started and we are not able to put much, if any, in our savings accounts. We will have the option to consolidate debt, start retirement accounts, have money to put in savings, and get better life insurance. Is this just a ploy for the financial company to prey on young people or is this real? Please help!
Which financial institution is currently the best for retirement accounts? I want to identify the best financial institution for opening a Roth IRA. It must have quality mutual funds with no load or transactions fees. I want to make monthly payments (~$200) and have that money immediately converted to shares of the mutual fund that I choose. So far, Fidelity and Charles Schwab will allow automatic monthly payments. Unfortunately, Chuck requires that the minimum for the mutual funds (usually $1000) is met before automatic purchases of a fund can be completed monthly. Fidelity will lower $2500 minimums to $300. Does anyone have experience with these financial institutions or another with a better policy? Vanguard can setup an automatic investment of $50 but you have to meet the $3000 minimum first to even open an account. While T. Rowe Price will also setup a $50 automatic investment with no minimum meaning the $50 can be immediately invested. The problems is that you are limited to T. Rowe Price Funds only (no stocks, no ETFs, etc.). So far Fidelity seems the best overall option with no clear cut winner.

I would like to change career to work as a Financial Adviser as I am interested in money, investing and financial planning. Does anyone have any experience in this area who can give me some advice on the best way to become a FA and whether this is doable for a 31 year old graduate who currently has no experience in this field. Thanks. Yes thanks for that hepp t. What happens is you work and study hard in a field where Universities are 'selling' courses where there is supposedly a ready market for the skills you learn. then you find out the only jobs available involve working with bad conditions and hours for a little more than minimum wage and you have a large debt to boot and you ddidn't need the degree in the first place. Unfortunately I am just another graduate without any tangible skills. I am looking for advice on how I can use my brain to make a real career for myself. I hope you never have a career crisis.
What are you charged for financial planning or investment advice? Many financial services providers tout their financial advice as being for free. But we all know nobody does anything for free. How can I get ratings on the top financial management companies? I want to make a fairly substantial financial investment, but want to do it in a "smart" way. I want to go with the best choice, for me , that I can possibly find and want to make sure that I make a "safe" choice. There are so many "financial counsellors" out there now that I'm a little scared. I want a "top rated" one in all aspects & need some advice on how to go about finding the right one and weighing all my odds before I make this big switch. I currently have it invested with a private counsellor, but am not happy with the situation I'm in right now. I'm paying substantial fees for the work his company does, & I'm not very satisfied in general. There is no "binding" agreement with them & the way I understand it I'm free to choose another company at any time. In case it makes any difference, I am a widow & don't have a very knowledgable background in financial investing.

How can a college student get financial aid if he/she is undocumented? Can she start the legalization process? I'm currently a 3rd year UCLA student pursuing a career in medicine. My family came to the US from the Philippines in 1993 under my dad's L-1 Visa. I graduated from my high school at the top of my class, have worked numerous jobs, pay for my car, rent, and even have my own online jewelry business. HUGE problem though -- I'm undocumented and am unable to get financial aid. My father's visa expired some time ago and because of problems with INS papers, the visa is now out-of-status and our case cannot be appealed. I DO have a social security number, a valid employment authorization card, a CA driver's license, work for a US company, and pay taxes. However, I am unable to get federal financial aid because I am neither a US citizen or a Permanent Resident. I am really struggling with paying tuition, so I am wondering if there is ANY way I can start the legalization process at this point. Med school is expensive, and without aid, I don't think I'll be able to go. Any advice? Just to clear things up, I came here LEGALLY with my family when I was a child. My social security number and driver's license, along with my employment card, are ALL VALID and not FRAUDS or STOLEN. I get very good grades and go to a very good school (UCLA). I did NOT ask to be here illegally -- my dad messed up with the papers while he was trying to adjust our status and somehow my siblings and I got stuck in this situation. I am not much different than the other students in my classes. Most of them were just lucky enough to have been born here. For the past 2 years, I've been borrowing from my friends to pay my tuition and paying them back as soon as I earn enough. I know the DREAM act would solve all my problems, but there's no way of knowing when and if it will be passed. I don't expect the government to give me a free ride (although I definitely qualify for it). All I am asking for is any way to start the legalization process with my status if I am already 21. and for those wondering, YES I DO PAY TAXES and have been for the 4 years I've had jobs. Please don't give me the "why should I pay for criminals" crap because I'm paying taxes too. I've been here for 13 years and basically grew up in the US and just recently became out of status. I know it's my dad's fault for not taking care of adjusting our status, but if you know of any way at all that I can petition for a visa MYSELF, I would really really appreciate it. I have thought about just dropping out of college because it's getting very expensive without any aid at all, but I am very diligent and determined to succeed.

What are some good financial retirement plans for parents after passing on family business? I am taking over the family business soon (Worth approx. $500,000) My parents are worried on how they will still sustain financial freedom after passing on their company to me. It is primarily a cash business and I want for them to retire without having to worry about money. They have savings but nothing is in the bank. (Old Asian generation mentality) I propose treating them like company board members that take a certain percentage from the business, while I keep the rest for expansion opportunities. What will be fair for both sides? Thank you.
